Frequently Asked Questions

  • HOW DO I SUBMIT?

Thank you for your interest in the 11 Seconds Magazine! You can submit your work in one of two ways. One — after each prompt release, which is typically open for one month, you may submit a finished work in response to the prompt for publication in that issue. Two — should you have an idea you would like to pursue outside of our typical publication schedule, pitch the story to us using the Submissions tab! This doesn’t have to respond to any particular theme, so long as it is focused on women’s health at large.

  • DO YOU ACCEPT SUBMISSIONS FROM WRITERS OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA?

Yes! We accept and publish writing from anybody anywhere in the world, so long as the work is in English.

We love to see pieces that aim to tackle reproductive, maternal, and sexual health issues across the globe. Feel free to explore all settings of care, we look forward to reading your work.

  • WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER WRITTEN ANYTHING BEFORE?

We promise— the writing process is always more daunting than it actually is! Give your creative voice a shot. We look forward to reading your submission.

If you would like to pitch your idea to the editor before drafting, email a story pitch to editor@11secondsmag.com or complete the form on the submissions tab!

  • DO YOU PAY WRITERS IF THEIR WORK IS ACCEPTED?

Currently, 11 Seconds Magazine does not pay for any work. We hope to eventually have the funding to provide compensation. 11 Seconds Magazine acquires First North American Serial Rights and First Electronic Rights.

  • HOW LONG CAN I EXPECT TO WAIT AFTER SUBMITTING BEFORE I HEAR FROM YOU?

We aim to communicate with writers within one week of submission. Delays are more likely during the last week of an open submission period. We love early submissions!

  • DO YOU ACCEPT SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS AND/OR MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS?

We do accept simultaneous/multiple submissions, but we ask that you label them as such and withdraw your work immediately via email if your work is accepted elsewhere. If you need to withdraw please email us with "URGENT-WITHDRAWAL [LASTNAME]" in the subject line.

  • DO YOU PUBLISH MULTIPLE PIECES BY ONE WRITER IN THE SAME ISSUE?

We typically do not unless they are a series of poems or interconnected short stories/artwork. We value each and every one of our contributors, but it's important to us to feature the work of a range of writers in each issue. Occasionally, we will publish written and art work that can exist separately in one issue.

  • WHO READS SUBMISSIONS AND MAKES EDITORIAL CHOICES AT 11 SECONDS?

All members of the editorial team review each submission. Sahana Narayan, Founding Editor-in-Chief of 11 Seconds Magazine, carefully reads every submission multiple times and makes the final decisions about accepting or rejecting submissions. Sahana Narayan is an award-winning journalist, public health scholar, and researcher at Harvard Medical School. You can contact her here: editor@11secondsmag.com

  • CAN I INCLUDE MY STORY IN A COLLECTION OR ANTHOLOGY IF MY WORK APPEARED IN 11 SECONDS MAGAZINE?

Upon acceptance, we acquire First North American Serial Rights and First Electronic Rights. 30 days following publication in 11 Seconds Magazine all rights revert to the writer and you are welcome to include the work in collections or anthologies. We ask that you credit 11 SECONDS as the original publication and we retain the right to include your work in future anthologies at a later date.
